Dobby died in March of 1998. He was killed when we was rescuing Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ollivander, Luna and Griphook the Goblin from the Death Eaters.
Dobby was a house-elf. They are servants to wizards. Magic ties them to their Master, so they must listen and do what their Master wants them to do. If they go against their masters commands, they must punish themselves with self-harm. The only way a house-elf can become free is if their master gives them a piece of clothing. Most house-elves would be devastated if they were given a piece of clothing, their freedom would be like an insult. However, Dobby was different. He wanted freedom. He was a "different" house-elf. He served the Malfoys, whom treated him inferior.
Although they were not supposed to disobey their master, Dobby did. Dobby knew that Hogwarts would not be safe for Harry, and he told Harry this even though he was not aloud. We find out that no wizard had ever treated Dobby with respect before, because when Harry asks Dobby to sit down, Dobby says, "Dobby has never been asked to sit down by a wizard -- like an equal --". Dobby tried many times to get Harry to say that he would not go back to Hogwarts. Of course Harry wouldn't, but Dobby tried throughout the year to get Harry to go back home. All he wanted was for Harry to be safe from the danger he knew was lurking at Hogwarts.
At the end of the year, Dobby was finally freed. Harry put a sock into Tom Riddle's Diary, and gave it to Lucius Malfoy, knowing he would hand it to Dobby. The sock was a piece of clothing, and it broke the magical bond that Dobby had to the Malfoys. He was now a free elf.
As a free elf, Dobby worked in the Kitchens at Hogwarts. He loved it, and he would visit Harry. Dobby helped Harry throughout his years at Hogwarts. When Harry needed a way to breathe under water for the second competition, Dobby helped Harry. When Dumbledores Army needed a place to practive DADA, he was the one to show Harry the Room of Requirement.
In the Kitchens at Hogwarts, there was this female house-elf, Winky. She was the "normal" house-efl, and was devastated that she was free. Dobby befriended her, and tried to make her feel better, even though it seemed nothing would get through to her.
In the end, Dobby ended up saving Harry's life when just five years earlier Harry made him promise to never try to save his life again. Harry, Hermione and Ron were captured by snatchers and were being held at Malfoy Manor. Right before Dobby disapparated away from Malfoy Manor, Bellatrix threw a knife at him. It hit him, and killed him. Dobby died a free elf. But not only was he a free elf, but he was brave, loving, and he was an individual. So let's remember Dobby, for being such a selfless being, and of course, for being a free elf.
